Four H Congress Takes Nashville by Storm

In the picture left to right. Angela Martin Mcnairy Co, Taylor Wright of Hardin County, Tennessee Representative Vance Dennis, Rachel Smith of Hardin County, and Heather McCormick Mcnairy Co.

Two Hardin County 4-H Members, Rachel Smith and Taylor Wright, both freshmen at Hardin Co. High School, attended Tennessee 4-H Congress March 28-30, 2010.

While attending Congress, they were able to pass mock legislation in the actual State Senate and House chambers, and conduct a statewide election for 4-H Governor, 4-H Speaker of the House and 4-H Speaker of the Senate.

Another perk of the trip was rubbing elbows with many state senators and representatives including a personal meeting with Hardin County's very own 4-H Alumnus Vance Dennis and our district Senator Mrs. Dolores Gresham.

Mr. Dennis was very generous with his time and was able educate our members on his daily responsibilities and the on goings as our state representative. The trip was not all meetings and learning. The 4-H members were able to have a night out to go enjoy downtown Nashville’s aesthetics and a nice dinner and our two young ladies chose the Old Town Spaghetti Store.

Another exciting activity that was planned for the attendees was a riverboat trip down the Cumberland on the General Jackson. They were fed lunch on the boat and entertained by musician Tim Watson while on the tour. Other youth from around the state competed in state level Public Speaking, Citizenship, or Leadership.

Sponsors for this trip were Hardin County Bank, Community South Bank, SunTrust bank and Central Bank of Savannah. With the help of these Sponsors every year we are able to send these 4-H members from Hardin County to State 4-H congress free of charge and let them experience our state government first hand. Please thank these sponsors and tell them how much their support of local youth events like 4-H is not going unnoticed.

Hardin County Extension offers programs in agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, and resource development.  The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and McNairy County governments are cooperating.  UT Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment.

Rabidoux Makes Stop in Savannah

Posted: March 9, 2010

Savannah, TN – Democratic candidate for District 7, Dr. Greg Rabidoux kicked off his “15 Counties in 15 Days” with a spirited listening stop at the City Hall in Savannah on February 27.

Mayor Larry Lowery of Saltillo introduced him to the crowd of about 25 who came to meet the candidate and share their concerns. The Mayor said that Greg represented the positive change needed in District 7 and that by electing him to Congress they would make sure we had someone representing us who is of and for the people, not beholden to special interests and DC lobbyists.

Rabidoux gave a brief glimpse into his background as a professor of American government and Constitutional law at Austin Peay University in Clarksville where he lives with his wife and son. He is also experienced as an attorney and mediator, and has served on the staffs of two members of Congress, both Democratic and Republican. He is the author of a recently released book Hollywood Politicos: Then and Now. Greg fielded a variety of questions about bringing good jobs to the district, raising our educational standards to prepare for those jobs, and the proposal by incumbent Marsha Blackburn to eliminate Social Security and Medicare through privatization.

The current healthcare reform bills dominated the discussion. Before starting the session, Rabidoux asked the audience for a moment of silence to honor recently fallen Tennessee soldiers Captain Marcus Ray Alford and Chief Warrant Officer Billie Jean Grinder.

Greg Rabidoux will finish up the listening tour this week with the final stops in Hickman, Cheatham, Davidson, Williamson, and Montgomery Counties.
