Two Hardin County 4-H Members, Rachel Smith and Taylor Wright, both freshmen at Hardin Co. High School, attended Tennessee 4-H Congress March 28-30, 2010.
While attending Congress, they were able to pass mock legislation in the actual State Senate and House chambers, and conduct a statewide election for 4-H Governor, 4-H Speaker of the House and 4-H Speaker of the Senate.
Another perk of the trip was rubbing elbows with many state senators and representatives including a personal meeting with Hardin County's very own 4-H Alumnus Vance Dennis and our district Senator Mrs. Dolores Gresham.
Mr. Dennis was very generous with his time and was able educate our members on his daily responsibilities and the on goings as our state representative. The trip was not all meetings and learning. The 4-H members were able to have a night out to go enjoy downtown Nashville’s aesthetics and a nice dinner and our two young ladies chose the Old Town Spaghetti Store.
Another exciting activity that was planned for the attendees was a riverboat trip down the Cumberland on the General Jackson. They were fed lunch on the boat and entertained by musician Tim Watson while on the tour. Other youth from around the state competed in state level Public Speaking, Citizenship, or Leadership.
Sponsors for this trip were Hardin County Bank, Community South Bank, SunTrust bank and Central Bank of Savannah. With the help of these Sponsors every year we are able to send these 4-H members from Hardin County to State 4-H congress free of charge and let them experience our state government first hand. Please thank these sponsors and tell them how much their support of local youth events like 4-H is not going unnoticed.
