Date For County Wide Referendum Set

Hardin County, TN - The Hardin County Election Commission convened on Tuesday, October 6th and a date has been set for a county wide special referendum to decide the fate of 1 cent of the local option sales tax. According to Hardin County Election Administrator Marilyn Adams, the date for the popular vote on whether or not to keep the local option rate at its current 2.5 percent will be Tuesday, December 1st.

In accordance with TCA 67-6-706.(a)(2) "The county election commission shall hold an election on the question pursuant to § 2-3-204, providing options to vote “FOR” or “AGAINST” the ordinance or resolution, after the receipt of a certified copy of such ordinance or resolution, and a majority vote of those voting in the election shall determine whether the ordinance or resolution is to be operative."

The wording of the question to vote "For" or "Against" in the election has yet to be finalized. Adams reported that election officials should finalize this within the next few days.
