Ms. Spencer was born January 9, 1935 in Cooter, Missouri to the late William Ellard Bond and Bennie Cook Bond and lived most of her life in Bolivar. She was a cook and waitress at Route 64 Restaurant, City Café in Middleton and Town House Restaurant. She is survived by a son, Keith Spencer of Bolivar; three daughters, Debra Anderson of Hornsby, Cindy Jones of Bolivar and Pam Martinez of Brownsville; four sisters, Barbara Mosier of Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Lenora Lee of Ripley, MS, Martha Sisco of Bolivar and Jewell Birmingham of St. Joseph, MI; one brother, Jimmy D. Bond of Steele, MO; 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Spencer.
A native of Whiteland, Indiana, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary Mayer. In December, 1960, he married Bobbie Taylor. Mr. Mayer served his country in the US Navy for 20 years, retiring as Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class. Upon leaving the military, he moved to Hardeman county where he was employed by Western Mental Health Institute for 20 years. Mr. Mayer also served Toone as assistant postmaster. Described by his family as a loving husband and father, he enjoyed working on the farm and was a member of the Bolivar 1st United Methodist Church. He leaves his wife, Bobbie Mayer of Toone; 3 sons, Todd Mayer and wife, Donna; Tim Mayer and wife, Gloria - both of Toone and Ted Mayer and wife, Sonya of Finger; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn.
The widow of Herman Lindbergh Hodge, who died October 6, 1999 after 51 years of marriage, she was a custodial supervisor at Western Mental Health Institute for 17 years. Mrs. Hodge was born November 19, 1932 in Alcorn County, MS to the late Clester William Nelson and Rose E. Meeks Nelson and lived in Middleton since 1948. She was a member of Rocky Springs Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Larry Lynn Hodge of Walnut, MS; three sisters, Ilene Yager of Corinth, MS, Etha Dean Crum of Walnut, MS and Lillie Mae Miles of South Carolina; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Hugh Nelson.
The widower of Glada Paulette Burkeens, who died November 25, 2007 after 42 years of marriage, he was self-employed as a boat mechanic and worked at Southern Marine Company. Mr. Burkeens was born September 23, 1943 in Rose Creek to the late Drew Archie Burkeens and Ruth Cosby Burkeens and lived most of his life in McNairy and Hardeman Counties and lived in Bolivar for over 30 years. He is survived by a daughter, Paula McAlpin of Bolivar; a son, Ronnie Burkeens of Bolivar; two sisters, Belinda Hardin of Michie and Jean Stroud of Memphis; two brothers, Hershall Burkeens of Memphis and Doyle Burkeens of Adamsville; three grandchildren, Ronnie Scott Burkeens, Blake Madley and Ashlee McAlpin; and two step-grandchildren, Chris Beard and Dakota Burkeens. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Jesse, Lolan and Gerald Burkeens; and a sister, Marie Head. |


Wilma Joyce Spencer, 75, of Bolivar, passed away Monday evening, August 23, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Brownsville.
Mr. Mayer died Saturday morning at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Mrs. Hodge passed away Friday morning August 13, 2010 at Pine Meadows Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Burkeens passed away Thursday morning August 12, 2010 at his home in Bolivar.
